Prague Castle Prague Castle is without doubt the biggest single attraction in Prague. It’s construction was commissioned in the 9th Century and has been the home to many kings and princes. Since 1918, the Castle has been the home of the state president. Much rebuilt and extended over the years, it naturally reflects a confusion of architectural styles that nonetheless harmonise perfectly to produce a startling effect. St.Vitus’ Cathedral boasts a main steeple of some 97m and can claim to be one of the most recognised landmarks on the Prague skyline. Building started in 1344 during the glorious reign of Charles IV but the programme was not completed until 1929, thereby explaining the mixture of Gothic and neo-Gothic styles. Inside are the royal crypt and the treasure chamber (holding the crown jewels). St. George’s Church is yet another stunning religious structure. This most beautiful basilica was begun around 921 and completed in the 12th century.
Sights/Visits of interest include: Various Courtyards surrounding the Castle
St. Vitus Cathedral (Chram sv Vita)
Chapel of the Holy Cross (Kaple sv Krize)
Castle Gallery
Royal palace (Kralovsky Palace)
Bohemian Chancellary
Council Chamber
Basilica of St. George (Basilika sv Jiri)
Goldmakers Alley
Continue down the old castle steps towards the Lesser Town (Mala Strana)
Of interest here is the Malostranske Namesti (Lesser Town Square) and Chram sv Mikulase (Church of St. Nicholas)
From here it is only a short walk to the Karluv Most (Charles Bridge), a magnificent pedestrian bridge over the Vltava River towards the old and new towns.
