September 2001
Manx Last Night of the Proms, 15th September 2001
Every year, almost to the day, the Manx National Youth Band and Manx Concert
Brass partake in the "Manx" Last Night of the Proms in the Gaiety Theatre, Douglas Isle of Man.
This event usually takes on all the characteristics that you would find in the Albert Hall,
Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance, The Fantasy on British Sea Songs, an appropriately misbehaved
audience etc, but this year international events have forced a change in the program to reflect
the feelings of the civilised world at this time. The program, as in the Albert Hall has been
changed in respect of those who tragically lost their lives in New York earlier this week.
Our thoughts are with them and their families at this time of immense loss.
3rd Section National Championships, Preston September 22nd 2001
At time of writing, only 7 sleeps to go!! After a hectic summer program,
which involved our hugely successful Gala Concert, our trip to the Lake Garda region of Italy,
the members of Concert Brass have pulled out all the stops, turned up for "extra" rehearsals,
sectionals, and the odd "team building exercise" in order to help us achieve our goal of
becoming National 3rd Section Champions of Great Britain. Our musical advisor, Mr Derek
Broadbent has been over to the Island to coach both the Manx National Youth Band, and to fine
tune our interpretation of Michael Balls excellent ""An English Suite". The
travelling party leaves Douglas on the 9:00AM sailing to Heysham, then on by coach to
"The Tickled Trout", our
base for the weekend just outside Preston.

The Open
As I am writing, the Open is in full swing in the Birmingham Symphony Hall.
We would like to wish all competitors the best of luck,
especially Williams Fairey from the North
West Area, who's conductor Mr Howard Snell is a resident of the Isle of Man.
Sadly...
The Manx National Youth Band has to say farewell to two of its players who
are leaving the Island to further their studies. Both Stephen Somers (Bb Bass) and Kathryn
Power (Eb Horn) are about to commence their studies at Salford University, both on the Brass
Band Musicianship course there. On behalf of the band, we wish them the best in their studies
and future careers.

Finally...
The members of Manx Concert Brass would like to record a formal vote of
thanks to His Worship the Mayor of Douglas, Mr.
Councillor S. Pitts J.P. and the Mayoress for the fine reception accorded to them on Wednesday
12th of September. The members of Manx Concert Brass were invited to the reception to receive
the Mayors best wishes for our forthcoming National Final Competition. Apparently, an extremely
good night was had by all I hear.....
