Young Musician of Mann 2001
Erin Arts Centre, Sunday 1st December 2001
The Young Musician of Mann competition was founded in 1983 by the Rotary Club
of Rushen and Western Mann. The competition is a bi-annual event open to "any instrumentalist
under the age of 19 years". Entrants must meet quite a long list of other criteria in order to
be eligible to enter the competition also! Members of the Manx Youth Band have quite a good
history in this competition. Previous winners include Jonathan Kneale, Eb Bass (1983), Stephen
Maddocks, Trombone (1991) and Thomas Power, Tenor Horn (1993).
This year's preliminary round, held on the 10th November saw Charlotte Chambers (Cornet),
Kathryn Power (Tenor Horn), Suzanna Power (Flugel Horn), Lyndsay Shimmin (Tenor Trombone) and
Karen Mahood (Soprano Cornet) enter against other fine young musicians from the Island.
Unfortunately, as with all competition, not all entrants could be picked to go through to the
final.
Kathryn Power, Suzanna Power and Lyndsay Shimmin were picked along with other entrants Gregory
Pearn (Violin) and Simon Bradley (Piano).
Despite strong competition on the day, by fine performances from all the entrants, Kathryn was
chosen to be Young Musician of Mann by the adjudicators.
Kathryn's program was as follows:
- Demelza (Hugh Nash)
- Jenny Jones (H Round)
- A Time for Peace from Essence of Time (Peter Graham)
- Rhapsody for Eb Soprano Cornet (Robert Eaves)
